Why do only 8 percent of people reach their goals?

Why do 92% of people fail to achieve their New Year’s resolution, specifically their health and fitness goals? Now, there could be a lot of reasons, but I believe there are probably two main reasons. These reasons could apply to probably 92% of people that work in a gym environment, your typical $20- to $30-a-month gym, as well as most people that are working out at home by themselves in their basement or in their living room.

The first main reason would be there is simply no support. What I mean by support is, most people are social creatures and we enjoy working out with other people. Now, there are exceptions to every rule, but most of us do better working out in what I would say small groups, two, three, four, five, six people, where it can be a fun environment, but not too many people where it feels overwhelming or intimidating. Ten or more people most of the time is no different than a group exercise class.

The second main factor would be there’s no plan.  There’s no perfect plan for anything, but when I was a trainer in a $20- to $30-a-month gym over 10 years ago now, which I still think holds true today, is there’s a lot of people that just kind of wander around the gym. Because there is no plan they get distracted easily,  and it’s just really easy to lose focus if you don’t have a plan.  A lot of people at this point ( usually 4 to 6 weeks) will either stop showing up the gym completely or the gym just turns into another version of happy hour with a lot of talking and not a lot of exercising, which is fine if that is your thing.

If you are struggling with having a plan and having support, we can help you at Maryville Fitness with our small group personal training program. If you feel stuck, please reach out to us and we can help you.
